The kitten just bit me.

It was kismet. Or cat met. Something.

We went to the shelter where we got Bakuhatsu (means explosion, was eaten by coyote (we think) about a year after we got him), Baku (the Japanese spirit that eats bad dreams if you call, hit by car), and Haku (after the dragon in Spirited Away, hit by car), to see if they'd give us another cat, which we expected they would not. We haven't kept a cat for a full year.

Enter Cleo.

Cleo is a 7 month-old female kitten, who is lying on my hands as I type. She has never been outdoors, and was owned by a woman violating her lease by having a pet, and who couldn't afford to take her to the vet. She came with luggage: toys, her special red blanket, shampoo, and kitty treats. She hadn't been checked in formally, and had only been in the shelter 45 minutes when we got there. We took her with the understanding that we'd pay for having her vetted and spayed.  She's my first calico cat, and my first without a Japanese name. She's the opposite of our last three boys, which means I think she'll stay in okay, but I hope to hell she knows how to catch mice. The kids love her, she chases balls (but doesn't fetch), and she just bit my nose. Our house is as big as a world to a cat who had been shut up in a single room most of the day. I think she'll be fine.

In other news? Little K is enjoying Brownies. MJ asked me today when Santa was born, but asserted that his Christmas Eve feat is not magical. My in-laws are coming for Christmas. Little K's Godparents just bailed us out for babysitting for the gig on Saturday. Knob Creek bourbon is tasty. Thanksgiving is at my house.

Trying lots of new things this time, by dark nowhere (4.00 / 1) #1 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 11:17:32 PM EST
aren't you?

Kittens are great, until they get to that crazy phase. Hopefully the girls aren't as bad for it as the boys.

We just got a new cat here. She's just old enough to have gone through the pure insanity phase. She's actually quite chilled out without being lazy. If you do something she doesn't like (say, get too close to her throat while petting her) she'll just paw you away without any force. It's quite cute.

I am not your dupe account.

Female kittens' crazy doesn't ramp up as fast as male kittens', but the female kittens' crazy never goes away.

I'm clearly not awake this morning. I read "means explosion, was eaten by coyote" and thought, gosh, the Japanese really do pack a lot of meaning into one word.

Yay for kitties! by toxicfur (4.00 / 1) #5 Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 07:15:16 AM EST
And congratulations to you and to Cleo for finding each other. The two of my cats who started their lives as indoor apartment cats never really expressed any interest in going outdoors until I actively encouraged them. The younger of those two -- Sasha -- was an amazing hunter both inside and outside. I think Cleo will be fine.

Is it a crabby kitty? by Linus Trollvalds (1.00 / 1) #8 Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 08:51:47 AM EST
Crabby cats like to bite, it is their way of saying they love you. Each cat has a different personality type.

Japanese names by iGrrrl (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 07:10:48 PM EST
Kaibutzu lasted about six years before being done in by a dog. He was a great cat, and ate jalapeno corn chips, bananas, and peas. Itchiko lived a long life, but she finished it with someone else. Gaijin we had for five or six years, but she was an adult when we got her.

I don't think it's the Japanese names. I think it's boy cat roaming that's the problem. Cleo came with her name.

hooray for kittens by cam (4.00 / 1) #10 Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 10:28:20 AM EST
I have to get back to VA and bring my kitty out. I left here there as I thought I was going to have to do training in CA, that is not happening, so I could have brought her out immediately.
